  BIOGRAPHY  INTRO. howell jenkins' story begins in wales, united kingdom. a naturally gifted child of arcane talents and belonging to a loose fraternity of wizards in his home country, howell spends his days learning his craft and dating half of the country's eligible bachelorettes. this lands him in a spot of bother when at fifteen he breaks a girl's heart, whose brother notably plays the harsh and brutal sport rugby, and he vows to make howell pay for hurting his darling sister. very narrowly avoiding danger that would ultimately result in his good - looks being forever tainted by not one, but three rugby players, howell opens a door to INGARY, a world separate from his own where he will later settle as a permanent resident. it is here howell falls under the wing of witch mrs. pentstemmon at the wizarding academy. howell is a prodigy, and is mrs. pentstemmon's favourite and last student. at seventeen, in the fields of the folding valley, howell catches a falling star and creates a pact with it, giving it his heart in exchange for power, creating calcifer, his fire - demon who will later power his wandering castle. what he sees in his memory that night will haunt him for years to come. shortly after this event, howell leaves the tutelage of his master and builds his moving castle, running from commitment to love and to country, creating many names for himself and allowing rumours of his illustrious love affairs to spread alongside their dark and untruthful endings, becoming wizard howl, the wizard pendragon & sorcerer jenkins of kingsbury and porthaven, howl the heartless, heart - eater of young women.

   ABILITIES / SKILLS / HEADCANONS   
one. NATURAL GIFT FOR ARCANE TALENTS, both of scientific and magic nature ⸺ he built a moving castle and is known throughout ingary under three separate names, all of which people do not suspect him to be the same person.
two. TRANSMUTATION, howl is shown under the appearance of a cat, a dog, and winged beast. he can do this at will and into many other creatures and animals, and even take the shape of other people.
three. HOWL'S CURSE is tied to his pact with calcifer, where he gave away his heart in exchange for heightened magical power, causing him to transform into a bird-like creature whenever he becomes emotionally vulnerable or involved in a conflict, creating a cycle of running away from love and responsibility. my personal headcanon for this is that he will gradually lose his humanity the longer he is cursed, until he is forced to take the shape of the beast and become unable to transform back.
four. VANITY, whilst not an ability it may definitely be a curse. howl is insanely vapid and concerned with beauty. mostly his own, but also that of others. he dislikes being dirty and injured, will cry if his potions have been messed with, and has spent an insane amount of money on clothes and make - up in his lifetime. though this does also mean that he will treat others to lovely things if he likes them enough.

main. hailing from wales, united kingdom, this verse follows the natural progression of both the novel and film (being that the war is ongoing, which is not in the novel but is in the film adaptation), with howl on the run from love and responsibility, sometimes wandering into towns to woo women and the like, whilst trying to uncover how to lift his curse before it is too late.
secondary. post - canon, howl is a traveling wizard giving aid to various towns and cities within ingary, either still cursed or by having broken it through canon means, or other.
alternative. for other verses such as original lores, ffvix, castlevania - it works that the door portal's could essentially transport howl to other worlds from his own doorstep. subject to plotting to make it work!! howl does also have separate verses for these.
